sumner: No, haven't seen that before. I'm on 20.09, though and as far as I can tell there is no systemd `dconf.service` anywhere.
<rycee>
It does seem like there is such a file in Nixpkgs unstable, though: `find $(nix-build '<nixpkgs-unstable>' --no-out-link -A dconf) -name dconf.service` prints `/nix/store/6vl9gqnfb64cm7ijzv92mk51c2zr8r6i-dconf-0.40.0/share/systemd/user/dconf.service`
<rycee>
So I imagine this could happen if this error could happen if `gnome.dconf` in `services.dbus.packages = with pkgs; [ gnome.dconf gcr ];` refers to Nixpkgs unstable but your user profile contains dconf from Nixpkgs 20.09.

So, given the situation with freenode. Is there any preference how this channel should handle it? Stay on freenode, move to another free IRC provider (e.g. OFTC), or use Matrix only?
<__monty__>
My preference is moving to Libera.Chat. It's Freenode in spirit.
<__monty__>
And a Matrix bridge is likely coming.
<toonn[m]>
Oh, this is already bridged?
<toonn[m]>
Ah, because of the Freenode bridge.
<toonn[m]>
Duh >.<
<rycee>
toonn: Right, and I imagine there is still interest in having an IRC bridge?
<__monty__>
For me that'd be great yeah. Matrix isn't really usable yet imo.
<Dandellion>
Question is will the room be matrix first or irc first
<Dandellion>
Even with bridges or not
<rycee>
__monty__: Right, I saw mention of Libera somewhere. Is there a reason to choose it over OFTC?
<__monty__>
I'm not sure OFTC is open to bridging. I don't think they have a Matrix bridge like Freenode.
<__monty__>
All the other communities I'm in went to Libera.Chat.
<rycee>
Dandellion: Dunno, I assume it would continue as-is. The only non-IRC things that tend to be used here are multiline code snippets and those would show up just like a pastebin link in IRC anyway.
<rycee>
I tried joining #home-manager there and it worked just fine. Dunno how stable it is, though.
<rycee>
Hmm, I wonder how well it works to bridge several IRC networks in the same Matrix room? Then people could just use whatever network they prefer :-)
<rycee>
But maybe that is frowned upon…
<toonn[m]>
Maybe something to ask staff, yeah.
<toonn[m]>
Do you use your own homeserver or matrix.org?
<rycee>
toonn: I use my own homeserver but the IRC bridge is through matrix.org.
<__monty__>
Ah, don't know what they were talking about earlier then.
<__monty__>
There's members of Freenode staff I like. I have no experience with OFTC. Apparently they don't support SASL which is slightly unfortunate.

__monty__: Right, yeah I only found this about authenticating with NickServ using SSL: https://www.oftc.net/NickServ/CertFP/ But I guess SASL is different?
<toonn[m]>
Yeah, very.
<__monty__>
I always use CertFP but it's just as easy through SASL and the latter allows you to identify with nick/password without sending it in clear text and more importantly it allows you to identify *before* connecting so autojoin actually works well without needing sleep.

__monty__: Right, yeah that sounds useful. So libera chat should be a good candidate. But we'd have to wait until there is a matrix.org bridge. In any case, seems they've only been around for a few days so it may be good to wait a while.
<sumner[m]>
I think the biggest question is how to basically tell a new bridge to whatever community that this is #home-manager?
<rycee>
Hmm, not sure I understand. How to set up a new channel bridge? Isn't that just to do it the way it was done with freenode?
<Kng[m]>
This is from "Add widgets, bridges & bots", altho libera.chat wasn't a thing :(
<sumner[m]>
<Kng[m] "This is from "Add widgets, bridg"> ah, I see. That sets it up from the matrix side into IRC.

I don't have a strong preference, but it makes sense to me to ultimately go with whatever nixos settles on as the official communication platform.
<__monty__>
I mean, that's going to be Matrix. Let's not kid ourselves.

Agreed about following the NixOS platform if the switch IRC network. I'm writing a comment on the NixOS RFC about the new communication platform. I'll write there that if they choose an IRC network (either as a primary channel or bridged with Matrix) then #home-manager will follow. If NixOS chooses to not use IRC at all then #home-manager will move the bridge to either Libera Chat or OFTC.
