Thank you - just to make sure I get it right - nickserv registration with freenode, or matrix/element? When you say that there isn't much on the channel any more you mean here on freenode, right? - and not matrix/element.

You need to register with Freenode nickserv, but there isn't much more on this channel on either freenode or Matrix

Hello there. I've just installed nixos on another machine and I'm looking at the manuals and I have no idea how to connect to the internet. For reasons unbeknownst to me, "wpa_supplicant" seems to be entirely missing the usual place where to find installed binaries.
<emmanuel_erc>
At least I have "networkctl"
<ToxicFrog>
emmanuel_erc: did you set `networking.wireless.enable = true` in configuration.nix?
<emmanuel_erc>
no, I didn't, but I'm setting it now and trying "nixos-rebuild build"
Siyo has quit [Quit: Bye]
<emmanuel_erc>
and my build can't succeed because it cannot connect to the network
orivej has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<samueldr>
emmanuel_erc: hopefully you still have the installation media handy
<emmanuel_erc>
I do
<samueldr>
not that you need to reinstall, far from it
<emmanuel_erc>
I tried to connect an ethernet cable earlier
<emmanuel_erc>
Do I need to enable that link with "networkctl <eth-name> up"?
<samueldr>
but you can mount the paths to the right locations like when you installed (e.g. on /mnt) and use `nixos-install` again, and it should rebuild again, on top of the existing setup
<samueldr>
not sure, I don't know about networkctl
<samueldr>
(I exclusively use network manager... I hate networking stuff :))
<emmanuel_erc>
I don't understand why wpa_supplicant was available during the install stage but wasn't automatically installed when I actually created the system.
<emmanuel_erc>
That's confusing.
<samueldr>
the installer image is not "copied" and used as a base to install from; the installation "just" builds the system configuration it's been given
<emmanuel_erc>
So, I made the mistake of not including wpa_supplicant
<samueldr>
most likely
<samueldr>
[16:19:36] <ToxicFrog> emmanuel_erc: did you set `networking.wireless.enable = true` in configuration.nix?
<emmanuel_erc>
That's annoying, that point is not very clear in the installation instructions (at least to me)
<emmanuel_erc>
or maybe I'm just bad at installing nixos
stree has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<emmanuel_erc>
I guess I'll have to do a reinstall perhaps
<samueldr>
the installation instructions indeed are brief and lack "space" to allow those kind of gotchas to be listed in a useful manner
<samueldr>
emmanuel_erc: you don't have to re-install from scratch, using the installation media to mount the existing filesystems is a supported use case
<samueldr>
so skip partitioning and formatting, mount the existing filesystems
<emmanuel_erc>
ah ok

I have a simple (I think) problem! I'm trying to reference the value of config.boot.kernelPackages.kernel inside a package overlay. Looks like: self.config.boot.kernelPackages.kernel inside an overlay doesn't work. Any ideas?
<zeta_0>
I installed nixos+xmonad on a pi 4 and got it working on a dynex tv, but when I tried to connect a 2nd dynex tv to my pi 4, they both start of on the rainbow screen when I turn on my pi, but only the original tv loads and the 2nd tv stays stuck on the rainbow screen?

zeta_0 I've only done a little with nixos on a pi 4, but from that experience, I think you should be looking for config.txt options to determine the graphics stuff. afaik xrandr is basically a useless stub on a pi 4
<zeta_0>
when I run xrandr, it throws the error: `failed to get the size of gamma for output default?`, also, only one of my tv monitors is detected, how do I get the 2nd tv monitor working?
hiro98 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

tejing: oh, and it's good to know that xrandr does not work correctly on raspberry pi 4s, I'll look for an alternative to xrandr that actually works on pi 4s.
<chrisaw>
Is it possible to reference a system config.* value from within an overlay?
<zeta_0>
oh, so the raspberry pi nix options write to a config.txt file, so hopefully enabling a specific nix pi option will fix my issue.

reminder that the default assumption for the generic sd image is that the boot.loader.raspberry pi options are NOT used
<samueldr>
it will do nothing, or if you force the generic sd image to work with them, it, hopefully at best, just won't be able to build correctly
<zeta_0>
samueldr: so if xrandr and the nix options can't be used to fix my pi 4 issue then what tool can I use to get my 2nd tv monitor working? also, so this #nixos channel is moving from freenode to matrix?
<samueldr>
read the discourse post for all the information
<zeta_0>
samueldr: I built/installed nixos on my pi 4 using these instructions: https://gist.github.com/chrisanthropic/2e6d3645f20da8fd4c1f122113f89c06 , as for the links you pasted, I'm guessing that I just need to import them into configuration.nix? Just making sure the nixos-hardware config won't conflict/collide with the config that I already have setup.

<samueldr>

<zeta_0>
samueldr: ok, I'll try to adapt the instructions from that link to my config, I hope that I don't have to reflash nixos on a microsd card again, that would be painfully, also, previously before I flashed nixos on my pi 4, I had to reformat the microsd card to fix it, I wasn't sure on what is the correct format, so I reformated it using the default option, so hopefully that's NOT the reason why the 2nd tv monitor is
<zeta_0>
samueldr: thanks for the help, I'll fix this issue eventually.
