<gchristensen>
my dear nixos wiki team
<gchristensen>
would anybody be interested in becoming a "pills" maintainer? it seems I'm not able to keep up with it these days
<Mic92>
I promote makefu :)
<makefu>
with nix2 there surely a number of changes need to be made. I am not super confident in maintaining the holy scrolls of the ancients but maybe qknight or paul seitz ( creator of https://nixcloud.io/tour/ ) may be the right one for that :)
<gchristensen>
I mean there don't have to be a ton
<gchristensen>
a lot of the work is just looking at issues and merging PRs
<gchristensen>
afaict I'm the only one who can merge PRs there other than eelco and domen
<gchristensen>
and that is silly
<Mic92>
gchristensen: maybe allow nixpkgs maintainer to merge?
<Mic92>
I don't see why this should be more restricted then nixpkgs
<gchristensen>
aye
<makefu>
good point :)
<gchristensen>
done
<makefu>
still, nix2 is here and the pills will need an update for this. maybe freeze the current pills as "nix-legacy" and fork off for nix2. add a disclaimer on the top as a reminder
<gchristensen>
I disagree
<gchristensen>
maybe a tag, but let's not stick to historical oldness just because
<Mic92>
most of the old stuff still works does it?
<makefu>
yeah okay, there is no lts release of nixpkgs so maybe there will also be no reason to have a nix1 branch
<gchristensen>
yeah makefu
<gchristensen>
Mic92: ^
<Mic92>
some documentation has versions
<makefu>
elasticsearch/logstash is a good example
<makefu>
however their docs are more of a reference than a manual
<makefu>
(something nix/nixpkgs/nixos lacks imho)
<Mic92>
yeah, for unstable for example
<Mic92>
you have to know the hydra path for that.
<gchristensen>
that is annoying
<makefu>
definitly
<gchristensen>
the website could use restructuring to help differentiate things for {nixos,nixpkgs}-{stable,unstable}
<gchristensen>
or, my personal favorite
<gchristensen>
have only two channels: nixos-unstable, nixos-stable
<gchristensen>
but that is the fevered dream of a madman
<makefu>
just like arch, no?
<gchristensen>
I don't know anything about arch
<makefu>
or the nixos-unstable and nixpkgs-unstable `channel` ...
<gchristensen>
my suggestion would be to drop nixpkgs-unstable
<makefu>
yes exactly
<Mic92>
nixpkgs-unstable is nixpkgs without nixos tests?
<gchristensen>
yeah
<makefu>
something like this
<gchristensen>
it makes everybody in the same boat, caring about each other
orivej has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<makefu>
gchristensen: geez, that "documentation" issue escalated quickly
<gchristensen>
they have axes they like to grind
<gchristensen>
almost all of their PRs escalate
<gchristensen>
as noted in #nixos-dev I'd like to accept parts of them and just shut down the PR but I haven't had the time to do it yet, and it hasn't gotten "that bad" I think? (cc Mic92, but should probably relocate to #nixos-dev for further convo)
<makefu>
imho these people are poison for the community
<makefu>
he, okay
<gchristensen>
I agree that they negatively impact the health of the community
<gchristensen>
it is hard to balance "they just disagree" and "they're poisonous"
<makefu>
true
<makefu>
i also think that configuration.nix could have some more docs, however parts of the PR are extremely oppinionated
<gchristensen>
they seem to want to shoe-horn us in to taking this niche position against PulseAudio
<gchristensen>
yes
<gchristensen>
those are the parts I've tried to eliminate from the PR but they don't want to
<makefu>
worst case is just forge a commit with the chances which make sense
<makefu>
changes*
<gchristensen>
no need to force it, I can show I rebased and edited the commit just fine :)
<gchristensen>
forge*
<gchristensen>
and I probably will if it doesn't resolve by the time work ends
<gchristensen>
they accused fpletz of lying and the nixos community of being nazis at one point
<makefu>
just add a deadline
<makefu>
wtf ...
<gchristensen>
that was probably a good line to ban, but I wanted to let them know it wasn't okay to give them a chance to shape up
<makefu>
gchristensen: wow you really took the time to respond and all he does is just continue with the same shit
<gchristensen>
I should make an archive of all the replies like that which I've written
<makefu>
you definitly should :)
<makefu>
make sure to archive.org the context
<gchristensen>
it is sort of hard to find tem
<samueldr>
if you remember the names, there's the involves: operator for PR search, though involves:grahamc won't he that helpful :)
<gchristensen>
lol
<samueldr>
(that's how I managed to find that though their behaviour is... extremist?... they provided good content in the past and is making actual efforts :/)
<makefu>
samueldr: that exactly is the problem, they come with good ideas and work but then the discussion drifts off into a spiral of extremist madness
<samueldr>
exactly!
<gchristensen>
challenging indeed :)
<samueldr>
if a half of the energy put into the extremism could've been put into making a more encompassing and understanding solution
* samueldr
sighs
<samueldr>
thanks for the good words about the wiki ♥
<gchristensen>
pfft
<gchristensen>
words are easy
<makefu>
when i get the chance to promote the wiki i take it :D
<makefu>
true, words are easy. however, this the wiki itself and this channel are the manifestation of the will of the community to have a successful wiki.
<gchristensen>
there you go, that is the hard part
