when the issue happened, i didn't have fiber, i had cable, though. so it might have been a path from the cable -> modem -> router

It depends on where you are living. I've had it on an almost weekly basis with customers while working at an ISP. Devices will die eventually if hit by a lightnight strike and the building doesn't properly "absorb" it.

thankfully that gear was my parents' and not mine, so i just replaced their router and bought a couple of cheap PCIe gigabit NICs
