<jtojnar>
I vaguely remember seeing the dialogue but it might have been on my Ubuntu box
<jtojnar>

<jtojnar>
maybe integrated into initial setup (though I remember the dialogue not following HIG)

Jan Tojnar: I don't think so. I believe Pantheon/elementary wanted this but I've actually removed it from their session. I wasn't sure if that program was deprecated
<drakonis>
we had 20.03 release a month and a half after march
<drakonis>
linux kernel devs cracking down on gpl shims
<drakonis>
oof nvidia owners
<worldofpeace>
yeah, a lot of what goes on there is because they clearly have more resources
<drakonis>
they have red hatters maintain some bits in there
<MichaelRaskin>
Hmm, how is ZFS classified from taint point of view?
<drakonis>
tainted
<drakonis>
this isnt very good for zfs

I can't help but giggle when I read that
<drakonis>
gpl condom
<drakonis>
ho ho
<drakonis>
this will break nvidia as of 5.9
<drakonis>
i wish i had amd
<drakonis>
i thought nvidia had a big foss reveal talk?
<MichaelRaskin>
I need my nVidia card to work, because Lenovo cannot even into connecting ports reasonably, but fortunately I am a happy nouveau user
<drakonis>
either way, it'll be bad for zfs and nvidia
<drakonis>
might force nvidia into sending code up

<cole-h>
More likely nvidia says "just stay on 5.8 or below lmao"
<samueldr>
I would think they'd start shipping out-of-tree patches before forcing users to stay on an older kernel
<samueldr>
after all, it's a policy from the kernel team, not a legal obligation
<samueldr>
nvidia's lawyers may get involved internally to validate it indeed is fine
alp has joined #nixos-dev
<drakonis>
it is set in the kernel actually
<drakonis>
its not a policy anymore
<drakonis>
seems like it is a result from facebook submitting netgpu patches that are tightly coupled with nvidia's drivers
<samueldr>
drakonis: maybe I wasn't clear, but what I meant is that there is no difference in the legal standing of the GPL, they have codified their policy in code, but since it's the GPL, nothing stops end-users, or other parties to distribute a modified version
<samueldr>
thus, a (all-but-forked) version where this is worked around in ways that goes against the policy
<drakonis>
ah i see
<drakonis>
hmm, i'd like to bring up a topic again
<drakonis>
building an events daemon for nix
<drakonis>
reducing or removing entirely the reliance on systemd for a variety of tasks
<drakonis>
for dealing with all the things outside of nix's scope
<drakonis>
ie: i've been looking a way to rotate my virtual tabletop's game worlds on a set schedule
<samueldr>
NixOS or nix?
<samueldr>
or uh, Nixpkgs maybe
<drakonis>
any of them, really.
<drakonis>
as i was looking to use the nix language to define these things
<samueldr>
from what I understand it's definitely not something that relates to Nix (the builtins and the daemon)
<drakonis>
right right
<drakonis>
so, NixOS it is then
<drakonis>
remember when i linked mgmt?
<drakonis>
its that but configurable in nix lang instead of go
<drakonis>
a weird puppet like language
<drakonis>
there's a really good idea there

Um question: By the rfcs readme, the author cannot be part of the shepherd team, that makes sense
<infinisil>
But does that mean that the author can't participate in the shepherd meetings?
<infinisil>
Because I think it would be weird if they couldn't
<worldofpeace>
infinisil: um, I would say the author should absolutely participate in the shepherd meetings
<worldofpeace>
isn't that how the author figures out what changes need to be made?
<infinisil>
That makes sense
<alexarice[m]>
colemickens: Would it help if I tested this, and would I have to build this myself to test it?
<colemickens>
alexarice: The last comment in the thread includes instructions on how to pull a pre-built copy :)
<colemickens>
And yes, any feedback is appreciated. Even just a "yeah it works" is helpful in this area, imo.
<alexarice[m]>
colemickens: ah, I am clearly not good a reading
<alexarice[m]>
I'll check it out tomorrow if I remember, out of interest how long does it take to build?

infinisil: IIRC it should read like the author participates, though it's a fuzzy memory
<colemickens>
if you don't use my cache, it will take a while. my 2.5-yr old quad-core machine took an hour roughly?
<alexarice[m]>
colemickens: I might give it a go at building as I have a relatively new cpu, had just heard things about firefox taking a *lot* of ram to build
<infinisil>
worldofpeace: Thanks for confirming :)
<colemickens>
alexarice: oh, this machine does have 64GB so I didn't have to worry about htat
<colemickens>
I don't know what I was doing when I built this machine tbh
<alexarice[m]>
colemickens: I thought my 16GB was good
