hello nixos-dev
<adisbladis>
o/
<calbrecht>

may anyone with the python experience pretty please tell me if the direction i'm going with the latests comment on #88613 is what we actually want from virtualenv, or if is miss the point there?
<calbrecht>
because, right now i somehow don't know what i'm doing beside poking in some python code, finding some places where my changes have an effect, and doing this for as long until i succeed.
<calbrecht>
it's a bit tedious like that.
<calbrecht>
and sorry for beeing so demanding, i can't hold it sometimes ;)
<calbrecht>
or am i even totally wrong her in this channel with this kind of request? makes me doubt.

<MichaelRaskin>
LnL: maybe it's actually a question to you
<LnL>
yeah, not sure about the exact version but I think they're all 10.13

man, recursive nix is cool
<samueldr>
can we get details about your cool use case?
pat_h has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<gchristensen>
I'm using it to build initrds for netboot images
<gchristensen>
typically this would take several minutes to make a squashfs, and several minutes to make the initrd which contains the squashfs
orivej_ has joined #nixos-dev
<gchristensen>
using recursive nix, I have a build which creates 1 build per store path in the initrd, each per-path build is in the store separately
orivej has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
<gchristensen>
the initial build of the initrd took about 2 minutes (much faster than before even, due to paralellization) and then a subsequent rebuild with a minor update to a small number of store paths in the initrd was able to completel yrebuild in 15s
<samueldr>
nice
<gchristensen>
in the one-build-per-store-path is creating a gzip'd cpio for each store path. almost all of the 15s is basically just catting them all together
<gchristensen>
I looked at making ipxe download all the cpio's separately, cutting out even that amount of time, but ipxe isn't very good at the internet
<gchristensen>
s/basically/literally/
<clever>
gchristensen: one thing to note, that breaks a lot of debug tricks
<clever>
gchristensen: you will often `cat initrd | gunzip | cpio -something` to debug whats in the initrd
<clever>
but gzip itself, doesnt like it with you concat things, and only unpacks the 1st one
<clever>
so linux sees more then you would when debugging
<gchristensen>
sure

any chance that someone from the nixos infra team takes a look at https://github.com/NixOS/hydra/issues/766 (tl;dr evaluating a jobset on hydra.nixos.org fails with some shady db errors)
