<clever>
gchristensen: this generates clover.qcow2 using nix, and templates 2 variables in clover's config.plist
<clever>
this allows enabling dtrace with a simple csrFlag = "0x23"
<clever>
its not perfect (clover could be built from source!), but its still an improvement

Setting / as `fsType = "zfs";` prevents generating the manual if `documentation.nixos.includeAllModules = true;` is also set (only / causes the issue, no other mount points, AFAICT). Minimal reproduction example: https://0x0.st/zMgl.txt (against current unstable)
<gchristensen>
hmm nice
<Shados>
yeah

I'll open an issue in a moment, but this is pretty odd

hydra offline? (might have missed a few lines due to disconnects)
<andi->
It is back now... nvm
<Shados>
Hmmm. `includeAllModules` adds `extraModules` and `modules` from top-level args... first one is empty, second is just `configuration`. So likely something somewhere ends up defaulted based on some value that depends on`fileSystems./.fsType`, and somehow the new value pulls in a derivation?

<marek>
anyone has an experiance with packaging dotnet apps? I'm trying to package one, thought of doing dotnet release and package the output, there is not a single use case of it in nixpkgs, I'm wondering what is the best practice
<pie_>
marek, tried looking for mono?
<marek>
pie_: yeah, haven't found any usage of dotnet publish

debugging a wireguard startup issue with hyper_ch2 (and chatting with zx2c4 about it) suggests that our mdns returns conclusive NXDOMAIN responses when it can't reach external DNS servers, where instead I think it should reply with a more general "failed to resolve" error. Jason added to wireguard a mechanism to retry resolution until infinity, but since mdns returns a conclusive failure it stops. anyone
<gchristensen>
familiar with this subsystem, and able to debug a bit?
<samueldr>
mdn is bonjour/avahi, right? can't help but that might explain my issues requiring to restart nscd/avahi sometimes to see other computers
<samueldr>
mdns*
<gchristensen>
so actually I'm not sure it is mdns, I'm out of my element here (hence the ask for help). but whatever is doing that early resolution is being conclusive when it shouldn't
<samueldr>
mdns, though, should match only .local
<andi->
"our mdns" as in what process exactly? Avahi? systemd-resolved?
<gchristensen>
how about nscd, could that be a culprit here?
<andi->
maybe. Do you use "local" names for the peers or why do you think it is mdns?
<gchristensen>
Jason suggested it was at fault
<gchristensen>
(but it is not)
<andi->
How did that issue surface? I used to have issues with our wireguard tooling on bootup but that vanished with the systemd PR I am running off... Not saying that we might not have another issue..
<gchristensen>
ah
<gchristensen>
one sec
<gchristensen>
okay so `wg set wg0 peer ... endpoint domain:xxx` during early startup fails to resolve `domain`. Jason gave us a way to have it retry infinite times (which we do, now) but it seems our resolver gives back a conclusive NXDOMAIN error, causing wg to give up: start[4576]: Name or service not known: domain:xxx'
<andi->
I think the issue might be with nscd then?! I am guessing that since w ehave that on all systems regardless of your DNS setup as far as I can remmeber
<gchristensen>
zx2c4 suggested "hosts: files mymachines dns [tryagain=return] myhostname" in nsswitch.conf, saying: what's happening with your file now is that the default action for tryagain is 'continue'. so then it winds up returning the value from myhostname when actually what we want is to return that tryagain to the user.
<gchristensen>
so, testing that :)

okay, adding "dns [tryagain=return]" to hosts did not change the behavior
<andi->
gchristensen: I think I am not running into that since the unit only runs after the network-online.target here. Not sure if you can properly simulate that in a VM test.
drakonis has joined #nixos-dev
<gchristensen>
I'm not sure that explains it
<gchristensen>
wireguard-wg0 is set for after network-online.target, and wireguard-interface-peer-key.service is set for after wireguard-wg0.service

Mic92: If I have a builder configured (or specify one), I’d expect nix-review to not download anything to my local nix store, but apparently it does.
<Profpatsch>
Is that a bug, intended or an implementation detail?
<niksnut>
looks like the garbage collector started in the middle of a build and deleted some programs
<gchristensen>
impressive

<gchristensen>

<gchristensen>
(I'm going to leave it on unless you'd like it off)
<worldofpeace>
infinisil: what's still problematic about having that link? It's a place for different funding platforms so they'll have many inherent differences.
<niksnut>
maybe there is a bug there, it's not very well tested
<gchristensen>
right, and macos running in a VM on a mac hardware host isn't the best place for it to get exercised
<niksnut>
well
<gchristensen>
since it is such a challenge to access, and once you do access it, debug it
<niksnut>
this is the best way to test it :-)
<infinisil>
worldofpeace: I still feel like it's not what I'd expect from it. When I see a button that shows me how I can sponsor nixpkgs, then I'd expect it to benefit nixpkgs directly. Or how does it get displayed? I'm not sure on that.
<worldofpeace>
and the foundation is described to support NixOS nixpkgs and nix so I'd think it would belong at those repo's
<infinisil>
Yeah so it would say "Sponsor NixOS/nixpkgs", and as a sponsor, I'd be a bit surprised when I realize that however much money I spend, almost none of it goes to people who do most of the work in nixpkgs, and that PR's don't get merged faster or so
<worldofpeace>
but non-profits don't distribute its income to the members or leaders.
<infinisil>
And time is arguably more valuable than money anyways, you can get all the build servers you want, but if nobody does any work, they won't be used. The build servers seem to be the part where the money goes, not towards the work
<worldofpeace>
I'd think if there was some objective that needed financial support in nix for example the donations would be used to further that? it just won't be the individule
kgz has joined #nixos-dev
<infinisil>
I don't know about that, I'm just saying that it's unintuitive for a sponsor button to be for that
<infinisil>
Just mentioning that link in the readme seems more appropriate to me
