<samueldr> :o
<samueldr> it seems I can just use the exact same system.img as with other android phones (for now) on the pinephone devkit
<samueldr> so I have X working right now (though no touchscreen, but that might be a known issue I need to check)
<samueldr> Linux is so amazing
<samueldr> I can build a system image that just works on so many different target devices :)

<samueldr> I think it will end up being nice... with fastboot being co-opted in the toolchain
<samueldr> touchscreen was two-fold, the module wasn't being built into the kernel, then the touchscreen cable had to be re-seated
<craige> samueldr++ :-D
<{^_^}> samueldr's karma got increased to 138
<samueldr> not sure if everything will match up with the final device
<samueldr> just now realized there is no device tree for it
<craige> By "final device" do you mean the early adopters device or the later device for general release?
<samueldr> both
* craige nods
<samueldr> (related to ARM shenanigans)
<clever> uhhhh, lol
<clever> is that your next target? :D
<samueldr> armv7
<samueldr> I checked
<clever> that seems doable
<samueldr> sure
<samueldr> but less fun than aarch64
ryantrinkle has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<clever> you just need to support the shifted keys so it can be used as a keyboard
<clever> form-factor wise, i'm not sure if id prefer a phone or a calculator
<clever> the phone has more screen, but the calculator has more keys
<clever> and a phone has a 3g modem out of the box
<samueldr> so glad to be "done" with the pinephone stuff, for a small while
<clever> craige: imagine doing all of your thin-client to vps stuff, on a calculator? :D
<samueldr> not sure what I should next focus on :/
<clever> samueldr: does the calculator even have wifi?
<samueldr> I guess it wouldn't, don't know
<samueldr> >> It works similarly to a wireless mouse: the student chooses the network of his choice and then connects automatically
<samueldr> just like my mouse
<samueldr> wat?
<clever> its a small dongle that goes into the micro port, and lets all of the students in the classroom link to one thing
<samueldr> yep
<clever> not sure if its wifi or just something custom like xbee
<samueldr> seems to imply "RF" by the screenshots
<clever> yeah
<samueldr> over 2.4Ghz
<clever> and if they are having to add modules like that, it likely doesnt have wifi built in
<clever> so thats a major minus for me
<clever> i cant just tether it to a phone
<samueldr> probably because wifi = cheating
<clever> the wiki page says it has an exam mode
<clever> which can be activated either from the menu, or a pc over the link cable
<samueldr> some details here
<clever> and that disables a lot of features, and blinks an led to signal that its in exam mode
<clever> but if i root the thing, i could just make it claim to be in exam mode
<samueldr> yeah
<clever> though the usb link to a pc, could validate the firmware
<clever> if they where paranoid enough
<craige> heh
<craige> I ordered a PinePhone, samueldr - is the calculator experience what I can expect :-D
<samueldr> currently, yes
* craige starts devising an aftermerket strap so he can use it as a large smart tricorder^w watch
<clever> that reminds me
<clever> there are some open source tricorder projects
<samueldr> aah, first time I've read something concrete about altfw on chromeos devices
<samueldr> last paragraph
<samueldr> hopefully the next batch of aarch64 chromeos devices, too, will support that

<tilpner> Hey, can anyone recommend an aarch64 device that runs NixOS with a mainline kernel, that I can get with case and power supply for <= €60? Doesn't need much power, but 100MbE would be nice
<samueldr> most likely the raspberry pi 3 family is the easiest to get going if you're not wanting any "hat" thingies
<samueldr> has plenty of case styles
<samueldr> though ethernet is limited by its usb hub
<samueldr> other than that, I don't know if others are mainline enough with support for as much out of the box
<tilpner> It doesn't need to be pretty, it's not going to be visible
<tilpner> I've been recommended TV smart boxes as a cheap way to get all-in-one packages like this
<samueldr> though not proven to run NixOS and mainline linux fine (yet) :)
<samueldr> >> amlogic s905
<samueldr> yeah, likely to get some mainline support
ryantrinkle has joined #nixos-aarch64
<tilpner> Get, as in "some poor volunteers might torture themselves by reverse-engineering what the vendor did?" or as in "amlogic behaves and mainlines their components"?
<samueldr> I think it's in-between :)
<samueldr> I don't know *why* they apparently have fair mainline support, but Amlogic (meson) has
<samueldr> Allwinner (sunxi) is from poor volunteers work
<tilpner> Yeah, I'm not deeply familiar with it, but I saw some of that with my Pinebook
<tilpner> But I'm still very sceptical of that TV box
<tilpner> If even the devices supposed to be used with various Linux distributions can have terrible support, how bad is it going to get with a device never meant for that :c
<tilpner> The RPi 3B+ seems to be in high demand, sold out at least 5 stores
<tilpner> *in at least
<samueldr> (joking)
<tilpner> (Or low supply, yes)
<samueldr> broadcom finally got rid of all those chips!
<tilpner> But mostly I don't want to buy everything separate
<tilpner> Yes, I know I'm picky
<tilpner> But with a Pi that's another SD card, separate power supply, case, etc.
<tilpner> Argh, decisions
<tilpner> And... a heatsink, apparently? (4?)
<samueldr> 3 too
<samueldr> it helps, but is not required
<samueldr> I don't have a "holy grail" device yet personally
<samueldr> the pine a64-lts looked like one for a while, but some friction with mainline at the time made it less attractive
<samueldr> I should look at it now
<samueldr> maybe it's over, and everything is fine
<samueldr> though it does have the advantage of having u-boot installable to an SPI Flash
<tilpner> The Pine64 case is out-of-stock :/
<samueldr> :/
<samueldr> (fun thing: I forgot to buy a case with pine a64-lts)
<samueldr> (I used the plastic box it ships in, cut holes in it)
<tilpner> Thanks for your help, samueldr! :)

<Ox4A6F> xiaomi-lavender unlooked an it is booting NixOS fine. Can ping 172.16.42.1.
<samueldr> Ox4A6F nice!
<samueldr> basically I just need to re-do the history to remove the not-good implementation of the usb gadget stuff
<samueldr> now that I have eyes inside the pixel 2 I can factor out the needed from the unneeded
<samueldr> what I know is that the lavender is much more lax with its usb stuff
<samueldr> the pixel 2 seems stricter, and the pixel 3 has been documented as being stricter

<samueldr> it makes my head turn how much board and soc-specific stuff there is in u-boot :/
<samueldr> mmc_bootdev is set by board/sunxi/board.c to the identifier of the mmc that was used to boot u-boot
<samueldr> no equivalent for other boards
<samueldr> well, there might be, but it would be named something else I guess
