I've heard of write protect switches, but this is the first write protect screw
<makefu>
reminds me of the write protection plastic switch on sd cards and floppies

Happens. Chromebooks are required only to have some sort of hardware-controlled developer mode, not for it to be easy to enable.
<gchristensen>
I thought google's defacto method for a long time was the screw
<simpson>
I recently got rid of an old old Alex, and it had had a switch, like a light switch or a BIOS switch. ISTR many switches on my development laptops. But some of them might have had screws too.
<gchristensen>
I like the screw because it is a bit more like "I'm taking this apart"

I got fed up with the length of time that the kernel compile was taking and, well, now I have a brand new a1.xlarge ec2 instance :-D

sounds nice :)
<thequux[m]>
'twould have been nice if I didn't have to find the Amazon image on hydra and upload it myself, but I wasn't able to find any reference to a public ec2 image

sphalerite: weird!
<samueldr>
there were screws for a long time, with chromebooks
<samueldr>
but recent platforms have all been made software-controlled
<samueldr>
well, firmware + annoying process of proof of presence

samueldr: funny thing is, battery presence and the cr50 play a role as well in the conventional cr50 way (cr50 can override battery presence). But as long as the WP screw is in, no writing for me :)
<samueldr>
yeah, as documented :D
<samueldr>
simply weird to see a Cr50 *and* a screw
<sphalerite>
yeah
<samueldr>
I guess bob has, in some ways, more security than other Cr50-toting devices
