<rizary> does nix-darwin will replace the need on homebrew or macports?
* rizary got fresh install macbook pro and want to try nix
<LnL> but nix on darwin provides just a package manager similar to homebrew, you can even use both on the same system
<LnL> depends a bit on what you use, nixpkgs has more packages than homebrew but some stuff might only work on linux
<LnL> but we don't have anything like homebrew cask, since that doesn't really make sense
<rizary> LnL: `some stuff might only work on linux` is it strictly speaking or the `nix-darwin` package hasn't make it available on MacOS?
<LnL> in some cases just enabling darwin will work, but the package definition will usually require some changes to get working
<Enzime> LnL: I would argue it would make sense because we package stuff like Discord/Slack on Linux
<Enzime> which would be equivalent to packaging dmgs :p
<LnL> a dmg isn't that special, we have support for unpacking it similar to other archives

<LnL> but it usually contains binaries instead of sources, while we prefer building from source there's no rule against it https://search.nix.gsc.io/?q=undmg
<LnL> the main problem with most unfree software for macOS is that the developers almost never provide a stable link to download

<Enzime> LnL: don't we cacahe all the URLs in the Nixpkgs anyway so it shouldn't be too much of an issue?
<LnL> pointing to urls that change is bad practice and unfree software usually isn't redistributable so we can't cache/build it
