<dhess> LnL: you around?
<LnL> what's up?
<dhess> Just got a new laptop, installed nix and nix-darwin. As far as I can tell my environment is identical on both but... when I try to `nix-env -i foo` on the new laptop, I get the warning, "warning: name collision in input Nix expressions, skipping '/users/dhess/.nix-defexpr/nixpkgs'"
<LnL> you have nixpkgs as both a user and root channel
<dhess> that's what I thought as well. How do I remove the root channel?
<dhess> I thought I did but maybe I missed something
<LnL> nix-channel --updat as root
<LnL> after removing it
<dhess> so now my ~root/.nix-channel is an empty file
<dhess> and sudo -i nix-channel --list returns nothing
<dhess> right?
<dhess> ohhh
<dhess> never mind, I fixed it. Thanks!
<dhess> perfect now
<dhess> I've probably said this before (last time this came up) but this really should be the default configuration on Darwin, anyway.
<LnL> yeah you need --update to actually apply the remove
<dhess> actually what I was missing was `sudo -i nix-channel --remove nixpkgs`
<dhess> I never use channels (except for darwin) and so I never remember that bit
<dhess> I just rm ~/.nix-channels and then touch ~/.nix-channels

<LnL> clever: do you use polyglot?
<Enzime> LnL: is there any progress on Swift on macOS?
<Enzime> apparently mpv started requiring it
<Enzime> and that's why it broke my PR (because apparently ofborg decided not to build darwin for the mpv update PR)
<LnL> dtz added swift, I tried to fixed evaluation once but didn't finish or stopped at build errors

<johnw> ldlework: agreed that more work is needed there
<LnL> hmm, did I miss something?
<johnw> just responding much later
<johnw> oh, that was meant to be in #nixos
<LnL> ah ok, was just going to say _much_ later

<dhess> johnw_: recently you did some work to "Nix-ize" some Mac apps. How did that work out and are you still doing that?

FRidh has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<johnw_> dhess: it worked out fairly well, and I'm still doing it
<johnw_> but it only works for about half of the apps that I use
<johnw_> several others don't seem to like running from within the store
<dhess> Do you have the derivations for any of these in a GitHub repo somewhere?
<johnw_> so, it seems that nix-shell as used by direnv is changing things in the environment like TERM, which it didn't before
<johnw_> I don't know if this is due to a change in nixpkgs, nix-shell or direnv yet...
<johnw_> but it makes it pretty useless to 'cd' into a direnv controlled project now, whereas before it worked quite nicely
<johnw_> oh, rm -fr .direnv fixes it, odd
<johnw_> i bet it's because it's preserving the environment that it saw when 'make' bulk generated these environments...
<dhess> johnw_: excellent, thanks!
<johnw_> so, it looks like I can't let Emacs or 'make' be the ones to generate the direnv env, otherwise it will clobber what iTerm sets up

<puffnfresh[m]> lol alright thanks, I'll get some Haskell learners in Atlassian to work on it
<LnL> I do vaguely remember this tho
