<johnw> anyone remember how to fix it when nix copy says "nix-store not found"?
<johnw> i need to make a cookbook for these things
<johnw> grr
<johnw> nix is sure making it hard to get this closure onto the new machine
<johnw> ah, had to manually kill nix-daemon this time
<dtz> :(
<pikajude> RIP
<acowley> Out of curiosity, are there plans in motion regarding moving to a newer clang in the stdenv given the impending LLVM 6?
<dtz> well the default already moved to llvm/clang 5 a week or so ago
<dtz> maybe longer
<dtz> but you mean move to 6 as well? https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/33374 -- 8 days ago, FWIW :)

<LnL> I'd like us to do better with ZHF compared to the ~500 remaining failures on 17.09
<dtz> Yeah, that certainly sounds more important. Esp in absence of any compelling reason motivating a last minute jump....
<dtz> But hey maybe if we fix all the failures we can kick off an eval with LLVM 6 and everything will work and we can have our cake and eat it too :P
<LnL> yeah, we’ll see but if we can’t get it in 18.03 it’s probably better to also wait with master
<LnL> otherwise it can make backporting stuff harder

<niksnut> anybody willing to test Nix 2.0 installation on macOS? please download/unpack https://hydra.nixos.org/build/69686209/download/1/nix-2.0pre5971_d4e93532-x86_64-darwin.tar.bz2 and run the install script

<shlevy> niksnut: FYI around a dozen or so people have used that successfully at Target
<niksnut> shlevy: nix 2.0 installation? cool

<copumpkin> greetings!
<LnL> hey, how are you doing?
<copumpkin> fine, in Florida right now at my gf's parents' house :) I see lots going on but I've barely been at my computer at all in the past few days
<LnL> ah that's why you've been so quite
<LnL> who's going to make all of those issues how?
<copumpkin> :D
<LnL> that reminds me, we should try to fix sandboxing
<copumpkin> :) yeah

<copumpkin> niksnut: if I set my NIX_REMOTE to an s3:// store, will it build stuff locally but not put it in /nix/store, and instead just upload straight to S3?
<copumpkin> or is s3:// only supposed to be used for substitutes, not for builds?
<LnL> that's what hydra uses for the cache
<LnL> and from how I understand it paths won't end up in the local store first
<copumpkin> ooh
<copumpkin> so for checking validity, it just checks if the narinfo exists?
<niksnut> it won't work because the S3 store can't build things
<copumpkin> and then registering is uploading the .nar.xz and the .narinfo
<copumpkin> ah
<copumpkin> is that somehow fundamental or just something nobody's gotten around to yet? I'm thinking of onfluence.devtools.bwce.io
<copumpkin> :)

<pikajude> wait a second, how is home-manager different from darwin-rebuild in general
<pikajude> or is this like the replacement for the nix-darwin environment.etc."per-user/..." hack thing
<johnw> that
<johnw> they overlap a bit
<johnw> but not entirely
<johnw> home-manager really aims at configuring anything that would naturally live under ~ or in the user environment
<johnw> while nix-darwin does a little of both the system and the user
<johnw> and nixos emphasizes the system
<johnw> one place that's weird is that nix-darwin installs apps under ~/Applications
<johnw> really it should be installing them as symlinks under /Applications
<johnw> home-manager installs them in ~/.nix-profile/Applications

<LnL> johnw: don’t really want to go over the entire diff right now, but the idea looks fine to me

<johnw> it would be nice to only have to run "darwin-rebuild switch" again
<mitchty> i dunno i prefer ~/Applications
