<makefu> samueldr: problem with "asking an individual" is that it is already too late when they browse your front page as the ip address is classified as personal data already.
<fadenb> makefu: That is not correct. There is an absolute need to know the IP to serve the request and if you can justify why you can save it
<fadenb> That is all fine under gdpr, the issue is that you may not process personal data without reason and proper protection
<fadenb> proper protection is not defined, so we have to wait whether we will need for example encryption of logs
<makefu> fadenb: yes, when you do not store logs then this may not be an issue. however this will be mostly the case. there are already services which `help` you keeping europeans out :D https://gdprshield.eu/ - i am still not 100% sure if it is satire or a real service
<fadenb> must be satire as it does not achieve compliance
<fadenb> saving ips is not an issue any way as long as you can justify it. Ddos protection is reason enough according to the lawyers I talked to
<makefu> sure, you can still store identifiable data as long as you justify the use
<makefu> Only 0 days until European Union's GDPR regulation takes action, on May 25th 2018
<makefu> (quote from their website)
<fadenb> hehe, I will try to publish basic data usage info on the wiki tonight
<makefu> awesome
<fadenb> people should at least know what is being processed and why
<makefu> yes exactly
<fadenb> It boils down to whatever mediawiki processes + the usual nginx/php + mailserver logs
<fadenb> Those are already limited in size (journald) but I will check how to limit them by time. One week should be enough to work against spammers + attackers
<makefu> cool!

<joepie91> happy GDPR day [in NL]!
<samueldr> what a sneaky @
<samueldr> and I like how it still copy/pastes into the proper form
<samueldr> reads sensibly, am not a lawyer, am not european, knows next to nothing to what is actually needed
<makefu> nobody does
<samueldr> :)
<makefu> the lawyer part and the 'know about gdpr' part
<samueldr> yeah, AFAIUI not until something goes the legal way, nobody knows exactly how far it acts, right?
<makefu> yes exactly
<makefu> but it is easier to send a declaration to cease and desist to websites without any privacy policy than going the way through court
<fadenb> My understanding is that for non-commercial things like the nixos.wiki fines would be minimal
<fadenb> As for cease and desist letters: Let's wait and see. I have a legal protection insurance ;)
