<ryantm>
A Discourse person just let me know that our Discourse site is also over the allowed pageviews on the Standard+ plan we wanted to move to. So, I'm asking them for more information.
<ryantm>
On the good news front, they said they can adjust our plan with no downtime.
<gchristensen>
this is a peculiar series of events and updates
<ryantm>
Well, I could have paid more attention to all the stats and limits, sorry. But it also would have been nice for them to be more aware and make it obvious.
<gchristensen>
yeah, it seems like they should have known
<sterni>
wasn't it supposed to be 5000 emails with our current plan?
<ryantm>
Here's the last thing they said about the limit:
<ryantm>
> I am noticing that your site is hovering around 225-250k pageviews a month. This does exceed the monthly pageview limit of our Standard+ plan. With that in mind we may need to get in touch about another plan upgrade. I’ll discuss this with the Team and be in touch if further changes are required.
<ryantm>
sterni: Yes.
<ryantm>
Well, I'm not sure what "current" is anymore, but the free hosting plan was limiting us to 5000 per day.
<sterni>
ah they reset us to the trial version for some reason i c
<ryantm>
gchristensen: zimbatm Do you think you could make accounts on https://meta.discourse.org/ then I could add you to the message thread I have going on with them.
<ryantm>
Zimbatm has an account and I added him.
<samueldr>
I don't know what, but it seems almost... sketchy? I don't know how though
<gchristensen>
done, `grahamc`
<hexa->
yikes, this sounds meh :D
<ryantm>
I don't think anything sketchy is going on, just things aren't super clear.
supersandro2000 has joined #nixos-infra
<samueldr>
yeah, sketchy isn't the word I would have liked to use
<samueldr>
my mental thesaurus is on the fritz
<gchristensen>
left hand / right hand problems
<samueldr>
maybe I don't understand the scale of the nixos discourse, but it seems like they're offering not much for what seems to be like just a bit too expensive
<samueldr>
do we have an idea of the progression month-to-month since the discourse was activated?
<flokli>
if even they don't have metrics and alerting about this, I doubt we have…
<samueldr>
yeah
<ryantm>
They say their free plan has a pageview limit of 100k, but the site has still be working with more than double that.
<gchristensen>
I guess it is a policy not technical limit
<samueldr>
>> What happens if I go over the plan limits?
<samueldr>
>> Your site will never stop working! We understand your site can get a lot of visitors quickly for any number of reasons, and success is something to celebrate! If your site exceeds plan limits for several months in a row, we will contact you to discuss flexible upgrade options.
<samueldr>
it's what they quote on the pricing page
<samueldr>
so I guess it's kind of expected
<ryantm>
I wish the email was like that too.
<gchristensen>
:D
<samueldr>
the e-mail is not "your site" it looks like
<gchristensen>
that one probably has a very directly measurable cost
<gchristensen>
ryantm: is the expected next price like $150?
<ryantm>
gchristensen: No. $300
<ryantm>
They don't have a discount on the Business tier.
<gchristensen>
no 50% discount at that size?
<gchristensen>
wow
<gchristensen>
do they know we're poor? :P
<ryantm>
Oops, I read that chart wrong, the pageview limit of the free plan is actually 50k, so we are more than quadruple it.
supersandro2000 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<gchristensen>
whew
<ryantm>
The way I'm reading what they are saying so far is if we quick start paying them, maybe they'll continue to ignore our pageview overage.
<ryantm>
Or maybe I'm just being hopeful.
<adisbladis>
"Nice page you have there"
<gchristensen>
hrm
<adisbladis>
"Would be a shame if something happened to it"
<ryantm>
They aren't saying it in a holding you hostage kind of way.
<ryantm>
More like a we don't want to explicitly say we are letting you do it in case we want to take it back later.
<gchristensen>
right
<gchristensen>
didn't mind ignoring the harder-to-quantify cost of page views
<gchristensen>
but I guess moved us in to a different bucket of monitoring?
<hexa->
uh, not sure where to bring this up, it's not strictly -dev, but more trademark related: https://nixworld.org
<hexa->
was found earlier today over in #krebs
<samueldr>
yiikes
<gchristensen>
thanks hexa-
<samueldr>
hexa-: any more investigation was done or that's the extent of it?
<hexa->
that is about it

in the domain whois
<samueldr>
unclear whether they were surfind on the branding at that point because the site seems incompletely archived
<samueldr>
surfing*
<adisbladis>
Looks kinda generic squatter ish
<adisbladis>
Generic squatter with keyword match pretty match
<adisbladis>
much*
<adisbladis>
Gah
<samueldr>
exactly
<samueldr>
but looking at it, it might not actually be
<samueldr>
but it looks and smells like it
<samueldr>
strings are unique to the site, generally
<samueldr>
easy to see with some of the spelling missedsteaks
<sterni>
as it is unrelated to nixos in content maybe nix is really in the spirit of *nix
<sterni>
and the nix logo is some kind of result of a google search for “nix logo”
<sterni>
I mean nixworld feels like nixcraft in naming which is a rather popular website
<sterni>
which does similar type of articles, but in a different quality
<sterni>
but who knows
<samueldr>
sure, definitely, I personally don't believe there is any malice intended here
<ryantm>
Yay, they just said "We are happy to have you run on Standard+ for now and will check back in a couple months to see where the site is at." gchristensen
