Perhaps by overriding the build or configure phase to enable a debug build? Though I'm really not sure about that.

i've got a thing where i can't emacsclient to an emacs started in gui-mode, cause some ivy function reliably fails in that scenario, so even M-x doesn't work

just tested and can do that

running gui emacs, ran a terminal, `emacsclient -t` then M-x with ivy
