<rprospero> I'm having trouble getting the emacs-overlay to play well with home-manager
<rprospero> If I put the overlay in my overlays.nix file, I can install through nix-env just fine.
<rprospero> However, it seems to be stopping home-manager from loading even the most basic of configurations.
<rprospero> The error messages is always:
<rprospero> error: attribute 'override' missing, at /nix/store/6q45lvfdd7cafmg1m47yw70c2qhm3v00-source/default.nix:64:15
<rprospero> Obviously the hash isn't clear, but it's pointing to line 64 in the default.nix of the emacs-overlay
<alexarice[m]> rprospero: How are you using home-manager and the overlay as mine works fine using the nixos module and `nixpkgs.overlays = [ ... emacsOverlay ]` in my home-manager config
<rprospero> alexarice[m]: I have pretty much the same
<rprospero> alexarice[m]: nixpkgs.overlays = [(import (builtins.fetchTarball { url = "...";}))];
<alexarice[m]> which channel are you on?
<rprospero> 19.03
<alexarice[m]> I'm on unstable, I don't know if anyone is using the overlay on 19.03.
<alexarice[m]> I expect it may not work
<alexarice[m]> you might be able to pass in unstable emacsPackages to the overlay
<etu> Hmm
<etu> The overlay depends on things that was introduced in unstable before 19.09 was branched off
<rprospero> I'll give that a shot
<etu> Because I remember that some things in the overlay was delayed due to things that needed to be merged to master

<rprospero> So I've tried switching over to the unstable channel and I'm still running into the same issue.
<rprospero> However, I'm also suspicious that I have not actually made the switch, since running home-manager swtch created almost no derivations.
<alexarice[m]> rprospero: you likely need to upgrade channels
<rprospero> nix-channel --list confirms that I'm on nixos https://nixos.org/channels/nixos-unstable
<rprospero> I've run a nix-channel --update, but there's still nothing new downloading
<alexarice[m]> rprospero: Are you changing channels on root or your user?
<alexarice[m]> I've always been confused by channels tbh
<rprospero> My own. The root's channels are still on 19.03
<alexarice[m]> I only ever got stuff to work by deleting all my user channels and having the root one as unstable though I'm sure there are better ways to do it
* etu never uses users channels
<rprospero> Well, there's part of my problem. home-manager uses the nixpkgs channel, not the nixos channel.
<rprospero> So now I'm redownloading the universe. Once that's done, I'll try running the overlay on unstable

<rprospero> Switching over to the unstable channel seems to have fixed the problem.
<rprospero> alexarice[m]: Thanks for your help.
