<niksnut> any nixcon organizers around? A tunisian colleague of mine would like to attend nixcon, but needs a visa invitation letter for that. Is that possible?
<gchristensen> niksnut: ping Profpatsch / _c_

<Profpatsch> gchristensen: Yeah, that mail is read by people who can do that (mostly _c_ I guess).
<gchristensen> cool
<gchristensen> https://git.io/vdr6P it'd be interesting if there were a way to have nixos / nixpkgs channels come from the same "base" that included files like .git-revision etc: https://git.io/vdr6P
<Profpatsch> niksnut: Is there a formular that needs to filled?
<niksnut> don't think so

<copumpkin> why is every coreutils tool a symlink to a single coreutils binary (pointed out on twitter)
<copumpkin> looks like it's trying to behave like busybox a bit
<zimbatm> why not? it's saving a bit of space and limiting the FS cache trashing
<zimbatm> now there is just one binary to keep in memory
<copumpkin> the various sorts of messes if you're unaware of it
<copumpkin> the /usr/bin/env one is called out in the review but other things like our bootstrap tool builders
<copumpkin> could break by trying to grab single programs out of it
<copumpkin> just feels like a bit of a hack
<zimbatm> it might become a problem if we want to split the coreutils into multiple outputs
<zimbatm> I don't have strong preference either way
<copumpkin> eh, mostly just surprising
<zimbatm> it hasn't been adopted by other distros so we're at the edge and probably going to incur more pain
<zimbatm> I wouldn't be surprised if it was adopted by other distros in the future though
<zimbatm> domenkozar:
<zimbatm> oops
<zimbatm> domenkozar: can we add @volth as a nixpkgs maintainer?
<zimbatm> he's been doing some good work lately
<gchristensen> I have concerns about volth (also I'm not sure volth is a he)
<gchristensen> when their PRs don't merge, they go back and delete all the commits
<gchristensen> they regularly delete their comments on old code reviews / issues
<zimbatm> yeah that seems like a reasonable concern
<copumpkin> might just ask them not to do that
<copumpkin> probably just a habit that nobody's had issues with before
<gchristensen> I have
<copumpkin> ah
<zimbatm> I haven't seen it but am not as close to day-to-day as gchristensen
<zimbatm> ok I'll have him/her to stop doing that and we can wait another month
<zimbatm> s/have/ask
<Mic92> gchristensen: Jaroslavas is at least a male name.
<gchristensen> Jan is too, right?
<Mic92> gchristensen: yes
<gchristensen> ok :) Jan, here, is usually female
<Mic92> In Europe it is more likely male
<gchristensen> cool
<Mic92> gchristensen: could this behavior be some kind of privacy thing? (leaving less traces on the internet?)
<gchristensen> maybe, but I think it is inappropriate when contributing to open source projects
<zimbatm> I know a lot of people who are too shy to contribute to open source
<zimbatm> it takes quite a bit of nerves for some people to show all your mistakes to the world
<copumpkin> yeah
<gchristensen> I understand and can sympathize, and I think it is inappropriate / isn't okay for a maintainer to do that
<copumpkin> yup
<zimbatm> agreed, we need accountability

<copumpkin> I've never seen this before, but
<copumpkin> >deadlock: trying to re-acquire self-held lock ‘/nix/store/dfkdfskw597yylkx25csf1xcmn7ns8qd-mounts.sh.lock’
<copumpkin> niksnut: what might cause that?
<copumpkin> niksnut: is that the deadlock you mentioned fixing recently?
<niksnut> no
<niksnut> I do remember seeing it recently
<copumpkin> it doesn't seem like anything user error could cause, right?
<copumpkin> it doesn't appear to be deterministic, alas
<niksnut> yeah
<niksnut> I think I've seen them a few times from nixops
<niksnut> when copying closures maybe
<copumpkin> in my case, it was an invocation to nixos-container for imperative containers
<niksnut> what version of nix?
<copumpkin> I think I'm on the nixUnstable as of a month or two ago
<copumpkin> I've now killed the machine but I'll check in a bit
