Random question: Should one thank tech support? I'm inclined towards yes because they often do end up being helpful, and I can imagine they often deal with a lot of crap so I'd like to just be nice. On the other hand, it's just another message that they have to deal with and it doesn't add any useful information. Thoughts?

I think you are usually supposed to confirm that the interaction is over, and possibly whether the initial problem is completely solved. This information packet ending with a «thank you» is not a full extra message.

sphalerite: i think it depends on the fix they did and how smooth the whole situation has been resolved. for example in my company i'd pretty much never want to do it due to their abysmal reaction time and performance...
