<sphalerite> why are SD cards so horribly slow
<thefloweringash> one of the reasons I'm looking forward to a board with nvme
<sphalerite> yeah… my nanopi m4 has a PCIe interface and a SATA hat to use with it, that's already so much better than SD
<sphalerite> maybe even more useful since I want to connect lots of storage (I have 2 small SATA SSDs and 2 8TB HDDs attached)
<sphalerite> no such luck with my rpi though
<sphalerite> I should look into booting it from USB.
<thefloweringash> the place this hurts the most is on a chromebook. you can't just dangle fast storage out a port and still call it a laptop
<sphalerite> oh yeah
<sphalerite> haven't been using my chromebook enough to really feel that pain
<sphalerite> although I have noticed the massive difference between the eMMC and the SD card
<sphalerite> problem with the eMMC being of course that it's too small…
<sphalerite> I want a pinebook pro :p
<thefloweringash> I mostly just boot into chromeos. I should really look into partitioning the onboard storage somehow
<sphalerite> does the kevin have 16GB like bob?
<thefloweringash> but kevin has such a nice screen, without touch, and a stylus
<thefloweringash> kevin's got 32, iirc
<sphalerite> ah
<sphalerite> yeah that'll be a more pleasant experience then
<sphalerite> I want a kevin too x)
<thefloweringash> I just don't want to break the chromeos, it's pretty useful
<sphalerite> I've given up on that :p

* DigitalKiwi has nixos on his chromebook
<thefloweringash> did you dual boot or clobber chromeos?
zupo has joined #nixos-aarch64
<DigitalKiwi> clobbered
<DigitalKiwi> i also upgraded the ram and the SSD
<thefloweringash> we have very different chromebooks, all my components are soldered on :-)
<thefloweringash> it's also the main reason I'm in this channel, and I haven't booted nixos on it in months :-\

<thefloweringash> well, I updated it, now it doesn't boot any more. it only makes the depthcharge sad beep.

<samueldr> DigitalKiwi: intel-based chromebook?
<samueldr> did you replace the firmware with a tianocore build?
<samueldr> sphalerite: the best way to "boot" from usb with a raspi 3 I think is putting tianocore (and only tianocore) on an SD card, and treating the raspi like a standard uefi machine, and forget about the fact it has a sd card
<sphalerite> samueldr: ah ok
<samueldr> you end up maximizing the compatibility with USB, the standard usb boot chain on the raspberry pi will sometimes not be able to boot from some usb drives
<sphalerite> oh, good to know
<samueldr> especially slow to start drives, like a usb hard drive
<samueldr> and having the tianocore splash screen, then grub, show up on the raspberry pi is a fun experience imo
<sphalerite> :D
<sphalerite> or systemd-boot :p
<samueldr> any uefi bootloader on aarch64 should work
<samueldr> hopefully it won't be long until upstream adds the rpi4 to tianocore/EDK2; it already is somewhat working apparently
<DigitalKiwi> samueldr: yeah intel and i'm using this one right now https://mrchromebox.tech/ (i tried the other one first but switched when i went to nixos, i had galliumos on it for a while)
<samueldr> mrchromebox's is probably the best you can get anyways
<DigitalKiwi> yeah i like it
<samueldr> he's a developer of upstream coreboot too
<samueldr> that's what I have on my c720p
<clever> 2019-08-25 14:01:31 < samueldr> you end up maximizing the compatibility with USB, the standard usb boot chain on the raspberry pi will sometimes not be able to boot from some usb drives
<clever> samueldr: those kinds of bugs are baked into the boot rom and cant easily be fixed
<samueldr> exactly
<clever> which is part of why the rpi4 switched over to using an spi flash chip
<samueldr> hopefully their 512K allows that :)
