<Thra11> samueldr: Did the wifi work on https://nixos.wiki/wiki/NixOS_on_ARM/Orange_Pi_Zero_Plus2_H5 ?
<Thra11> Mine seems to be generally booting ok, and has loaded the brcmfmac module, but there's no wireless interface listed by `ip addr`
<samueldr> Thra11: I don't know
<Thra11> Searching the internet, people using other distros talk of missing firmware in /lib/firmware/
<samueldr> hm, sharing a dmesg would be annoying without networking
<samueldr> though it'd be relatively easy to spot
<Thra11> I have a serial connection at the moment
<samueldr> great
<Thra11> samueldr: anything to grep for?
<samueldr> less annoying I figure
<samueldr> maybe fw, firmware
<samueldr> or load?
<samueldr> [ 9.945454] brcmfmac: brcmf_fw_alloc_request: using brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio for chip BCM43430/1
<samueldr> it seems to have ssuccessfully loaded a firmware
<samueldr> [ 11.007940] brcmfmac: brcmf_sdio_htclk: HT Avail timeout (1000000): clkctl 0x50
<samueldr> no idea what that means though
<samueldr> it could be benign
<samueldr> >> Linux version 4.19.63
<samueldr> the simplest thing to do would be use linux_latest
<samueldr> or, at least, to try
<Thra11> samueldr: Ok. I'll give that a go
<samueldr> there's almost always improvement
<samueldr> though, no guarantees, only the first thing I'd try
<samueldr> something else to consider is trying another distro with the same mainline kernel
<samueldr> e.g. does armbian with mainline kernel support it?
<samueldr> if so, see if they have configuration option for the kernel that may influence it
<samueldr> (though unlikely here since it's in the dmesg log)
<samueldr> and maybe patches
<samueldr> IIRC armbian even on the mainline kernel have a handful of patches
<Thra11> samueldr: I found this https://forum.armbian.com/topic/4137-orange-pi-zero-plus-2-nano-pi-neo-air-ap6212a-wifibt/, which seems to suggest that it's been working in armbian
<samueldr> hmm
* samueldr checks the firmware path for nixos
<samueldr> under /run/current-system/firmware/
<samueldr> though it could very well be that those paths are for the BSP kernel
<Thra11> There is no ap6212 subdirectory in /run/current-system/firmware Do you think there should be?
<samueldr> see the coincidental message I just sent :)
<samueldr> that's it, the path with ap6212 is from the BSP (99% sure)
<samueldr> brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.txt maye be missing and needed
<samueldr> haven't diligently validated though
<Thra11> /run/current-system/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.txt exists
<samueldr> then it's not missing
<samueldr> hm
<samueldr> looks like all the firmware files would be where the kernel needs them I guess
<Thra11> The txt files does contain a comment: "The following parameter values are just placeholders, need to be updated."
<samueldr> I wouldn't be too concerned about that
<Thra11> Ok
<Thra11> I'll try linux_latest first. See if that magically fixes it

<Thra11> samueldr: linux_latest doesn't magically work, but it does have an error: https://gist.github.com/03a948291c0483145f1ebd8f6677ef71
<Thra11> I wonder if it really expects "brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.xunlong,orangepi-zero-plus2.txt" to exist
<Thra11> Hmmm. Seems there are firmware files with that kind of name format
<Thra11> Maybe I just need to find a copy of that file somewhere

<samueldr> Thra11: that .txt one mentioned on the forums, I'd try adding it to that location in firmwares
<samueldr> >> On my OPiZeroPlus2, it try to load "brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.xunlong,orangepi-zero-plus2.txt", but on this one it seems to fall back using the normal file and WiFi is working.
<samueldr> all in all looks like it's a good change to allow loading it from a specific path per-device
<samueldr> though, I guess it's possible it'll always print that error, even if it ends up using the other .txt file
