<bennofs[m]> is it possible to put kernels on a non-fat partition on the raspberry pi? uboot supports ext4, right?
<bennofs[m]> oh wait it uses extlinux
<samueldr> bennofs[m]: yes: https://nixos.wiki/wiki/NixOS_on_ARM#Disable_use_of_.2Fboot_partition
<samueldr> it uses u-boot
<samueldr> what you see is what u-boot uses for its Generic Distro Configuration Concept https://nixos.wiki/wiki/NixOS_on_ARM#Details_about_the_boot_process
<samueldr> it uses the existing file format and conventions from extlinux to piggy-back on existing code, AFAIUI
<samueldr> my two main boards (pine a64-lts, raspberry pi 3b) both not really use the FAT partition
<bennofs[m]> samueldr: cool, thanks. I see further up on that page a nix config recommending to use kernelPackages_rpi only for rpi 1, why not for 2 and 3?
<samueldr> older docs :), first, raspi 1 isn't supported by the mainline kernel AFAIK, then at that time linux_rpi wasn't configured to build properly for aarch64, thus making it a no-go for raspberry pi 3
<samueldr> mainline linux is always preferred, AFAICT
<bennofs[m]> but the _rpi version has the patches for cpu frequency scaling / cpu governors, so might want to use that on 3 as well
<bennofs[m]> is the doc for stable? i guess it's right then since stable doesn't have aarch64 _rpi iirc
<samueldr> when the docs were written (before the new wiki opened) there wasn't really aarch64 support in stable, so not really, but yeah, it may be a good idea to add that *to the raspberry pi page*
<samueldr> and even remove the raspberry pi specific parts of the main nixos on arm page, which is getting long :)
<samueldr> (and it's good that it's getting long!)
<samueldr> nowhere in the text do they list the architecture
<samueldr> only "arm"
<samueldr> (screenshot shows aarch64)
<gchristensen> they're based on https://developer.arm.com/products/processors/cortex-a/cortex-a72 so armv7 capable
<samueldr> interesting
<gchristensen> very expensive per core I think?
<samueldr> looks like it is
<samueldr> I said interesting only on the technical side
<samueldr> I know next to nothing to amazon's offering, and then, I know it's confusing and hard to gauge prices without a bunch of experience
<gchristensen> $0.4080/hr for 16 cores 32gb ram, $0.02/hr for 1 core & 2gb ram
<gchristensen> packet's 96 core box w/ 128G ram is $0.05/hr
<gchristensen> packet's 96 core box w/ 128G ram is $0.50/hr*
<samueldr> ouch
<samueldr> (as in, amazon has a premium price)
<gchristensen> extremely
