<gchristensen> I think andi- was talking about picking up one of those
<sphalerite> I'm seriously tempted, once I start working I can probably actually afford it, eventually. Although I might also need a desk to use it on :D
<samueldr> who needs a desk if you get four of those, stack them and put a plank on them!
<sphalerite> that's a desk too
<sphalerite> very expensive and not very ergonomic desk though, I suspect
<sphalerite> although it does allow putting the speedy network connections on them to good use!
<andi-> sphalerite: i was turned down by the lack of documentation or willingness to support openbmc :/
<andi-> They told me from 40k£+ onwards they would consider telling me the wiring of the as2400...
<gchristensen> and you said no???
<andi-> Yes.
<andi-> sphalerite: check avantech they are almost half of the starting price
<andi-> gchristensen: also the size of CPU cache isn't great.. While I am an enthusiast for alternative platforms I really don't need it that much right now
<sphalerite> ooft
<gchristensen> yeh but only 40keur
<gchristensen> err pounds? is that pounds?
<andi-> Pounds
<gchristensen> yeh but only 40klbs
<andi-> ...
<samueldr> kilopounds...
<gchristensen> muahaha
<andi-> gchristensen: go sponsor us :P
<gchristensen> for real though, you should chat up Ed in #worksonarm
<sphalerite> andi-: ooh, they also actually have HTTPS which is nice
* andi- is lacking time right now..
<gchristensen> I have sneaking suspicions that knows things and places
<andi-> I talked to the openbmc guys a while ago.. It shouldn't be too hard but those business tactics...
<andi-> They would probably sell more with openbmc
<sphalerite> ooh, they also support more OSes
<sphalerite> yeah avantech's is looking better
<sphalerite> wait no that was just me reading stuff wrong
<sphalerite> also prices in GBP
<sphalerite> only single-CPU options though. muh cores!
<andi-> Shipping to Germany from their UK office was around 70€
<gchristensen> sphalerite: have you considered that maybe you have _too many_ cores, andy ou really just want to stick with one, or one half?
<andi-> I am both amazed and let down by the performance of the community build box..
<gchristensen> I know, I also wish it had 96 3.4GHz cores
<andi-> also to be realisitc I've around 60ish cores of intel stuff idling at home right now... I just don't get to do anything with them anymore :/ So besides an expensive toy it doesn't really help me right now. If I'd have to design a new system for the dayjob then I would probably consider that again.
<sphalerite> gchristensen: is there really such a thing? :D
<gchristensen> sphalerite: 96 3.4GHz?
<gchristensen> or too many?
<gchristensen> probably not in one chassis / probably?
<gchristensen> I have a few NVIDIA Tesla K80s here and they have too many cores, in that they take a huge amount of power and cooling
<sphalerite> kidding aside, I think 32 would be fine too x)
<andi-> yep :-)
<andi-> sphalerite: whats your workload anyway?
<gchristensen> if anyone can figure out how to make compilers take advantage of CUDA cores I could get us a box with ~14,000 cores ;)
<andi-> clang shader backend?!1
<gchristensen> now we're cooking with CUDA
<sphalerite> andi-: considering it just as a regular workstation and simultaneously as a home server/NAS. Not sure how seriously I should take the idea yet really, but it would be really cool just for the novelty value of it :p
<andi-> yeah, thats what I thought
<sphalerite> and to just generally get a feel for nixos-on-aarch64 and improve the state of that
<andi-> more realisticly I'd prefer having 4-8 core systems based on aarch64
<andi-> with ~8GB+ of memory and an m.2 slot..
<andi-> for home-usage
<sphalerite> https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv8/rockchip/asus-chromebook-flip-c101pa it's a bit below those specs but at least it's aarch64!
<andi-> I mean in a board-only format
<andi-> not a notebook :-)
<sphalerite> I'd probably buy one of those if I didn't already have my other ARM chromebook
<sphalerite> ARM32 unfortunately
<sphalerite> but hey, it runs libreboot so there's that
<sphalerite> I've found recently that that's quite sufficient for a lot of my day-to-day stuff, as long as I can shell into more powerful machines. Makes me feel like I spent a bit more than necessary on my main laptop.
<andi-> yep
<andi-> I started renting hardware on hourly basis more often at shops like packet.net
<gchristensen> their spot market rates are amaze
<andi-> haven't even used that so far
<andi-> 2a AMS vs EWR: 3$ vs 0.2$
<andi-> thats nice
<sphalerite> EWR?
<andi-> New York
<sphalerite> whoa
<gchristensen> yeah they're $cheap at spot prices
<gchristensen> I'm working on making ofborg run at spot prices so the money I'm getting stretches longer
<andi-> nice
<andi-> you are putting in a lot of work :+1: ;-)
<andi-> I'm reading all those mails that I get for the new ofborg PRs.. it's great
<gchristensen> :D
<gchristensen> I'm doing a lot of work, but it is so little in the face of the >1,300 PRs merged in the last 30d
<gchristensen> it is cool to help enable that
<andi-> yeah, feeling bad for not being able to contribute right now :/
<andi-> I am already in bed again and super tired -.-
<sphalerite> the machines gchristensen got us are probably the most powerful ones I use, and it's been really great for my attempts at getting ARM32 stuff working better
<gchristensen> don't
<gchristensen> contribute how and when you want and in ways that feel good
<sphalerite> although that's stalled a bit now because I kind of want to get my degree :D
<sphalerite> yes! And going to bed early is awesome, I've been doing it too recently
<andi-> it's 9pm here... I havent been going to bed before 1am in like 8 years
<gchristensen> :o I go to _sleep_ at 9am like once a week or so :P
<sphalerite> I haven't been able to stay awake past 10pm the past week or two, and waking up early has felt great
<gchristensen> same... I've always been more of a morning person
<andi-> i have always been an all-night person
<gchristensen> Convenient for me:)
<sphalerite> I've been pretty inconsistent
<sphalerite> never extreme all-night, like I don't think I got up past 2pm consistently for any extended period of time
<sphalerite> but certainly staying up until 3 or 4 on a semi-regular basis
<sphalerite> never really felt that good though
orivej has joined #nixos-aarch64
<gchristensen> I have never in my life slept past noon :(
<sphalerite> how do you manage that, with going to sleep at 9am?
<gchristensen> oh
<gchristensen> :o I go to _sleep_ at 9pm like once a week or so :P
<gchristensen> ;)
<sphalerite> oooooooh right that makes it clearer :D
<sphalerite> andi-: I'm not sure I actually understand what OpenBMC does — does it run as the main OS on the machine?
<sphalerite> or on the BMC..?
