<adelbertc> does the current Nix install on macOS single-user nowadays? Is that preferred to multi-user?
<adelbertc> i seem to remember a couple years ago it was defaulting to multi-user, i think thats what i have on my own machine
<adelbertc> but running the installer on this new laptop it looks like its default to single-user
<LnL> yeah, it's single user by default for uninstall/simplicilty
<adelbertc> ah makes sense, so for folks experimenting with NIx its easy to remove if they want to bail
<adelbertc> but reading the manual it sounds like if you know you want Nix then multi-user is the way to go?
<LnL> yeah, the daemon is better in terms of purity and security so I'd recommend it if you're serious about nix
<adelbertc> oof new macbook = new os, im reading that big thread on installing on Catalina now
<adelbertc> looks like theres no consensus on how to handle that yet :/
<__monty__> There is though.
<__monty__> Synthetic.conf is the way to go afaik?
<adelbertc> and then creating an APFS volume for /nix ?
johnw has joined #nix-darwin
<adelbertc> hm even with synthetic.conf it looks like theres tradeoffs btwn symlink vs. mounting a volume vs. a DMG route (??)
<adelbertc> but it also sounds like single-user install seems to have less trouble with this?
<__monty__> There's an issue with symlinks.
<__monty__> I don't remember what it is but I feel like it's not a good idea.

<adelbertc> LnL: do you have any thoughts on least terrible way to get a Nix install working on Catalina? im only intenidng on using it for local package installs, not setting up entire Nix infra for projects or anything like that
<LnL> I didn't push my error improvements yet but other then that the pr should be good to go

<{^_^}> nix#3212 (by LnL7, 15 weeks ago, open): [WIP] install: configure and bootstrap synthetic.conf on darwin
<LnL> yeah
<LnL> or if you don't want to build it yourself https://gist.github.com/LnL7/58ff80f4bab1a397d16e3c559b6c323a
<adelbertc> oo nice
<adelbertc> if i run that could i then just run the multi-user install after? or will ti not like the existing /nix
<adelbertc> looks like thats what the installer does. runs that script then proceeds as normal
<LnL> sure, that should also work
