<gchristensen> "Yep, check out synthetic.conf(5). You can make a virtual symlink at / that points to a location you control. Or you can make a virtual empty directory that you can mount a volume dedicated to Nix at."
<LnL> what's that?
<gchristensen> I asked that EBADTWEET person about Nix getting an exemption on Catalina https://twitter.com/EBADTWEET/status/1159283989355495424
<LnL> oh! was wondering if that's what it was about
<LnL> this sounds like good news, was starting getting a little anxious about it
<gchristensen> yeah :)
<LnL> I should probably try to make some time for it and try out the latest beta

<LnL> hmm, this thing is a bit weird
<gchristensen> catalina?
<LnL> ls //nix: No such file or directory
<LnL> lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 23 Aug 8 21:54 nix
<LnL> either I did something wrong or we won't be able to make the synthetic link functional without rebooting :/
<gchristensen> ouch
<LnL> or maybe the order is important?
<LnL> the data migration was seamless, except for the usual /etc/bashrc stuff that gets overridden
<LnL> yeah, symlink only works after a reboot
<LnL> on my last machine I created a separate apfs volume for the nix store and have that mounted to /nix
<LnL> but oddly enough, unlike the non functional symlink, apfs.util doesn't seem to create that when triggered manually
<LnL> and somehow some nix services started, even tho /nix is supposed to be an empty directory now
<LnL> FYI for reference, I couldn't find it online anywhere yet
