Has anyone tried to set up a docker container for nix building that uses the host machine's nix store?

I was thinking about doing this so that I can build Linux binaries on my Mac and have all the dependencies get added to the nix store to avoid rebuilds and cache downloads.

I think the current installer doesn't setup paths right. It used to add a line sourcing nix.sh to ~/.profile, but it doesn't anymore. The post-install text says that you can do so manually in your current shell, or re-login to have things work, but logging out and back in doesn't do anything because neither ~/.bashrc nor ~/.profile have changed.

I also had an uninstall problem where a /etc/nix/nix.conf was left over from a previous multi-user install, and it made sudo nix-channel complain about the nixbld group.

I'd like to help fix that, but I still don't understand the thinking behind what's root and what's not with nix-channels, and feel like I'd probably make things worse.
