oh cool
<NinjaTrappeur>
phyfey, we (FFDN, french associative telecom federation) are currently working on updating our current fleet management to be nixops based. We currently run a couple of test router (qotom-based) at Baionet.
<NinjaTrappeur>
The experience is pretty positive so far.
<NinjaTrappeur>
Would be happy to share the effort with you regarding hardware support though :)
<phyfey[m]>
Thanks NinjaTrappeur, I totally forgot about qotom mini pc's. I like the look of these, they seem super solid.
<phyfey[m]>
Do you have any documentation on your project currently?
<phyfey[m]>
* Thanks @freenode_NinjaTrappeur:matrix.org, I totally forgot about qotom mini pc's. I like the look of these, they seem super solid.
<phyfey[m]>
Do you have any documentation on the nixos/ops side currently?
<phyfey[m]>
wish i did french in primary school lol
<phyfey[m]>
do you use WiMAX for station to station communication?
<cransom>
i did. it's not quite as handy as a few others i've found.
<NinjaTrappeur>
right, I need to issue a cert for the @...
<NinjaTrappeur>
thanks for the heads up
<NinjaTrappeur>
You're not missing much, the website needs to be revamped
<cransom>
(but i do enjoy being able to stumble through baionet.fr and only taking a couple seconds for it to decipher in my brain)
<NinjaTrappeur>
No, regular wifi + yagi
<flokli>
samueldr: gchristensen: verified the turris mox boots and I have the right serial, so will pick it in the bag for nixcon :-)
<NinjaTrappeur>
phyfey, The repo needs some cleaning and I'm currently traveling to nixcon, I'll clean that when I'll be more settled :)
<gchristensen>
btw I totally cannot get my 0.0.0.0/0 PR working even now :P
<phyfey[m]>
<NinjaTrappeur "phyfey, The repo needs some clea"> No problem, appreciate the time! What kind of range are you able to get with WLAN+Yagi and is the landscape mainly flat?
<phyfey[m]>
<gchristensen "btw I totally cannot get my 0.0."> A constant struggle lol
<andi->
networking is a constant struggle.
<gchristensen>
let's go shopping
<andi->
I hope not for network equipment...
<gchristensen>
hopefull ynot
<NinjaTrappeur>
phyfey, we are surely not in a "flat landscape" configuration. The longuest one we currently have is a couple hundred meters. Some friends (scani.fr) do have several kilometers point to point links (using some ubiquiti hardware though) in production.
* NinjaTrappeur
is not really a radio expert, there are people order of magnitude better on the topic in this room.
<phyfey[m]>
yeah I can definitely appreciate that, I appreciate the info regardless
<gchristensen>
phyfey[m]: where do you want to set up?
<phyfey[m]>
lemme take a look at some distances real quick
<gchristensen>
I mean region-wise-
<phyfey[m]>
midwestern town, population of around 150,000
<phyfey[m]>
its pretty hilly, line of sight starts to become an issue earlier in adoption
<gchristensen>
are you familiar with nycmesh?
<phyfey[m]>
somewhat, its on my research list
<cransom>
i know a person that does a number of point to point setups in iowa, but iirc it's all ubiquiti gear... i think... maybe. at least not any open sourced.
<cransom>
and well, the roaming hills of iowa are not a thing anyone is familiar with.
<phyfey[m]>
my needs im estimating are around 2 miles of station to station distance with psuedo line-of-sight
<phyfey[m]>
yeah Id like to stray away from ubiquiti gear if i could
<phyfey[m]>
We also have alot of trees in the area and getting antennae height is going to be an issue
<cransom>
the line of sight part is usually the killer part. if it's not, you end up with more headaches.
<phyfey[m]>
i could see getting close, but getting over some of the taller tree cover would probably require some extra licensing/permitting labor
<phyfey[m]>
thank you for yall's thoughts ill talk to ya later!
