<clever>
on a good day, i now get 20,000 kbyte/sec
<nodyn>
It should work out on the theorical speed, my main trouble is with ISPs in France. They tend to get kind of prickly about what you use to connect (and documentation on their part is really lackluster).
<clever>
i initially had to spoof my old router mac
<clever>
but i then discovered, if you properly release the dhcp lease (innnnnnnnnn the old router), you can get a new one from any mac
<nodyn>
I don't think I'll be able to do that, I might just have to layer it on if I want to have a NixOS router; or just any kind of custom router actually. They got a really tightly closed firmware and not much for me to go on, except identifiers to who-knows-what I'm supposed to have gotten in a letter, forever ago.
<gchristensen>
you can't just connect a modem-only?

gchristensen: thats why i hate it when ISP's giveeeee you a combo router+modem
<gchristensen>
me too, I usually opt to bring my own modem
<clever>
for my current ISP, the "modem" is actually a router that they have neutered to do no actual routing
<clever>
it has 1 fiber port, 2 phone ports, and 4 ethernet ports
<clever>
only the 1st phone and 1st ethernet work, all others are dead
<clever>
and it provides no nat, dhcp just directly gives you 1 public ip
<nodyn>
It's weird actually. I have a separate modem and router (which also serves as ADSL modem when you do have that), but any attempts I've made yielded nothing. I think they've just coupled them so tightly you'd have to monitor the connection between them to figure out anything.

Ah yes, the famous spotty connection that comes with crapboxes. One of the main reasons I want to use my own router. I really need to dig into this.
<nodyn>
clever, reading through your config, why is there an Hydra running on your router? (Still new to the whole NixOS thing, by the way, even with that one server running it and hosting a few services)
<clever>
nodyn: i wanted to run a hydra, and i needed a machine thats always on
<clever>
and the router is always on, or i wouldnt have internet!
<nodyn>
No Internet? What is this? The middle ages? :')
<nodyn>
It's kind of amazing you can afford running a build server on your router though.
<clever>
more that if the router was turned off, i would loose internet
<clever>
the hydra is just directing the builds, and the laptop/desktop do the actual building
<clever>
though the router itself is a dual-socket xeon, with 6gig of ram
