pushqrdx has joined #nixos-emacs
<pushqrdx> i want emacsgcc nox (the pgkt stuff) but unstable nox seems to be emacs 27 the non native compile branch
<pushqrdx> also unstable nox seems to have just install a terminal version of emacs, i want the gui wayland version
<selfsymmetric-mu> pushqrdx: What's nox?
<pushqrdx> selfsymmetric-mu emacs-overlay has a no X version called nox which is also said to have the pgtk branch (that implements pure gtk3 version for wayland)
<selfsymmetric-mu> Oh I see! "No X". Clever.
<selfsymmetric-mu> I run X myself, so I don't have experience there. Props to you for forging ahead with Wayland though.
<pushqrdx> been running X since i switched from macOS to linux some month ago, but what initially made me switch was wayland's smoothness but then i found it lacking and switched to X and stayed there since then
<pushqrdx> but i decided to give wayland another shot
<selfsymmetric-mu> Funny, I've been thinking of going the other way myself, from Linux to Mac. But they'd have to improve their Nix experience first.
<selfsymmetric-mu> I like the idea of using M1 and having a nice polished background to my OS.
<selfsymmetric-mu> What made you switch?
<pushqrdx> emacs sucked on macOS, but if it wasn't for that i'd have stayed macOS is very clean and it's unix based
<pushqrdx> oh and i didn't like big Sur
<selfsymmetric-mu> Ah, shame to hear. Emacs is my main driver so that makes Mac a no-go for me.
<pushqrdx> some people say that it's running "fine" for them but honestly for me it was so slow, tons of input lag and when i talked to people around it seemed like a common macOS retina related issue
<pushqrdx> something to do with macOS hidpi, the resolution is too high for emacs or something
<selfsymmetric-mu> Whoa weird. Yeah, I've heard about input-lag issues too.
<selfsymmetric-mu> Thank you for your perspective!
<adisbladis> I was forced to use osx in a previous job
<adisbladis> It's one of the most broken unix systems I've ever seen
<pushqrdx> selfsymmetric-mu np :D
<pushqrdx> adisbladis what's broken about macos, the os is very very clean and decent
<selfsymmetric-mu> Yeah I have to admit my own unix system has some broken things about it. My monitors don't come back after I unlock my screen so I have an xrandr command on hotkey. I get a random full-screen freezes about once a month with nothing indicative in journalctl.
<pushqrdx> also if you're doing anything with graphics/music osx is simply unparallaled for the quality of software you got there
<selfsymmetric-mu> Yeah Adobe Photoshop on M1 and retina is hard to beat for many jobs.
<selfsymmetric-mu> But okay, the Nix issues and input-lag issues mean I'm staying on NixOS for now. Mostly I need a good programming environment so it works for me.
<pushqrdx> idk what's the situation on more recent macs, 2019 and M1s input lag might have been less noticeable there since they are more powerful so you'd have to ask around
<pushqrdx> i wish they didn't turn macOS 11 into a piece of candy, because i was kinda enduring my emacs life in there by running it the terminal
<pushqrdx> macOS overall if you minus out the emacs inconvenience is super smooth/comfy environment for anything except gaming/3d graphics
<selfsymmetric-mu> Gaming's pretty good on NixOS now with Proton. Caveat, it's no good for VR yet.
<selfsymmetric-mu> I'd definitely miss that if I were to move to Mac.
<pushqrdx> on mac you'd probably forget about playing any games except casual stuff, there's CrossOver there
<pushqrdx> so emacs/wayland anyone? been struggling to make it work here
