<kai_w> I'd like to work on support for device-tree overlays. Apparently samueldr has been working on this recently?
zupo has joined #nixos-aarch64
<kai_w> as I see it, there are two ways to do it: (a) apply the overlay while building the /boot directory, and (b) put the overlays in /boot, and let u-boot apply them
<kai_w> option (a) is IMO a bit nicer, since we can catch some errors when building. but it does mean we need to know what DTB we start with (instead of bundling them all, as we do now)
<kai_w> any other opinions?
<samueldr> loading at runtime
<samueldr> I was interested into loading at runtime because UEFI boots mostly has no way to handle dtb overlays or even generically loading a device tree
<samueldr> my notes are on another computer
<samueldr> I *think* it isn't the one I was looking at https://github.com/ikwzm/dtbocfg
<samueldr> but the same principles apply
<samueldr> the kernel can handle loading at runtime
<samueldr> but I think this shouldn't stop anyone implementing dtbo loading elsewhere!

<samueldr> this is an additional thing :)

<samueldr> but I haven't looked much at doing it through u-boot

<kai_w> OK, in this case I'll try to add the option to specify the dtbs to upload in the extlinux-conf builder. there's a TODO in `extlinux-conf-builder.sh` for this anyway :)
<samueldr> yes, that would be awesome _not only_ for dtbos, but also adding custom DTBs
<samueldr> e.g. you have a board without a mainline DTB, or with a custom DTB
