pie_: Thanks! I gave that a look. As for my progress I am still trying to get the testing part right.

bk1603[m]: how are you doing it? i dont have any bright ideas but i would have probably tried to use the testing infrastructure (which i have actually still not tried at all) along with a vm with declarative containers
<bk1603[m]>
I'm trying a `nixos-rebuild build-vm`. But the thing is I haven't yet been able to succesfully install systemd from source yet.
<bk1603[m]>
I tried using debootstrap
<bk1603[m]>
with `systemd-nspawn`
<bk1603[m]>
but that wasn't exactly successful either.
<bk1603[m]>
And umm, I don't quite remember what else I've tried. But what I do remember is I tried things, and then I asked in #nixos-dev about this, got suggested `build-vm` approach. And after a few issues now I am on this hopefully last issue and then I'll be able to test what I've done :)

??? im probabyl not understanding something but why arent you "just" using the existing nixos stuff <bk1603[m]> I'm trying a `nixos-rebuild build-vm`. But the thing is I haven't yet been able to succesfully install systemd from source yet.
<pie_>
by which i mean make changes in a clone, and point the nix expression to build from the clone instead of upstream
<pie_>
bk1603[m]: by the way, #nixos-systemd also exists, just a sidenote
<pie_>
though -dev is going to be more active

pie_: I've tried making the default nix expression point to my clone. But that doesn't work out of the box. Because of differences between the sandbox and my machine. (Or so I understand.)
<bk1603[m]>
The furthest I've got to is to this error message where `meson` tries to install stuff to `/etc/systemd`, and naturally fails because of not having permission.
<pie_>
oh you arent on nixos or something?
<bk1603[m]>
Oh yep that's where I get confused. I am no NixOS. 21.03

<bk1603[m]>
whoops
<bk1603[m]>
I am *on
<pie_>
are you trying to compile from master?
<bk1603[m]>
NixOS
<pie_>
err
<bk1603[m]>
sorry
<bk1603[m]>
Yes
<pie_>
are you trying to patch systemd master?
<pie_>
because i guess things might have changed or something since the working verions of systemd (afaik we are always behind?)
<bk1603[m]>
Umm, that's what jan tojnar suggested too
<pie_>
ok i see your messages in the other channel
<bk1603[m]>
but when I git blamed the build file
<bk1603[m]>
The relevant lines were 4 years old
<bk1603[m]>
Yep I just sent a message on #nixos-systemd today :)
