<
andreabe_>
would it be possible to cross compile from linux to darwin?
<
andreabe_>
I'm going to find out soon :) $ nix-build '<nixpkgs>' -A hello --argstr system x86_64-darwin
<
LnL>
no sure how much stuff works, but I think so
<
LnL>
that's not cross compiling tho
<
andreabe_>
LnL: any idea how would I cross-compile then? basically I have all the builders I want for linux but no macs other than my laptop
<
andreabe_>
and I'd like to cache a bunch of stuff
<
LnL>
note that these will be different versions than native
<
LnL>
cou can't use a cross build as a substitute for a native build
<
LnL>
the entire dependency tree is either native or cross
<
LnL>
but you can install packages side by side ofcorse

<
LnL>
depending on what you want you could do it the other way around with distributed builds
<
LnL>
that way you can make nix-build run the builds on the linux hosts
<
andreabe_>
what do you mean by "the other way around" ?
<
andreabe_>
this is what I understood: if I want a binary artefact I can cross build it, but if I want to cache nix builds native and cross won't mix

heard of someone today giving up with nix because of the darwin experience
<

I'm leaning more in the direction of giving up darwin because of nix

getting a nixos server definitely made me use nix more
