I needed something else recently, to basically overlay multiple paths together with symlinks, so say I want to only overwrite nixos/default.nix, but keep the rest of nixpkgs, it would create symlinks to build such a structure. aranea: BTW it is almost always cheaper to use fetchTarball if you can, so if you are fetching something from github, you probably want to use e.g.: fetchTarball "https://github.com/msteen/nixos-vsliveshare/tarball/master" (this is especially the case for nixpkgs, which is ~1.8GB with fetchGit, and ~100MB with fetchTarball)
