Ericson2314: you mentioned it in the rust issue
<
pie_[bnc]>
Ericson2314: if it ever happens :P
<
Ericson2314>
ah ok
<
Ericson2314>
haha yeah really
<
Ericson2314>
pie_[bnc]: Also I made a crate2nix issue earlier
<
Ericson2314>
and carnix issue before that
<
Ericson2314>
you were asking about grants before, this would be a great one to do
<
Ericson2314>
well funding, not grants
<
Ericson2314>
A proposal saying 1) rustup is a cludge 2) cargo caching sucks 3) rustc build system is too complex
<
pie_[bnc]>
yeah but i mean what would be good to do, also not sure what you menat by carnix and c2n issues
<
Ericson2314>
I wrote issues there mentioning using the build-std stuff
<
pie_[bnc]>
tbf i still have barely any idea how any of this works ;_;
<
Ericson2314>
nix + the std-aware stuff (which has had a number of PRs landed, just been small steps) would be really nice
<
Ericson2314>
Well, learning and demonstrating the knowledge is sadly the thing no one will pay you to do
<
Ericson2314>
except for GSOC
<
Ericson2314>
and similar
<
Ericson2314>
(We probably should be doing nix GSOC, come to think of it)
<
pie_[bnc]>
due to some unrelated personal history i dont have the confidence to wing it though
<
pie_[bnc]>
being constantly surrounded by good tech people leaves me thinking how could i possibly get paid for the kind of stuff
*i* do xD
<
pie_[bnc]>
Ericson2314: so who do i submit the proposal to? :P
<
Ericson2314>
mozilla is kinda tight on funding atm and they are getting build-std stuff fro free
<
Ericson2314>
nlnet has done a bunch of Nix stuff in the past
<
pie_[bnc]>
also i imagine people are not into part time unknown time horizon stuff, and i really could use the flexibility -_-
<
Ericson2314>
well, present too
<
Ericson2314>
people like part time when it means it is cheap per unit time
<
Ericson2314>
a lot of open source work has high latency with like getting PRs reviewed and things
<
Ericson2314>
so being able to spread out the work so something else can pay you so you don't starve while you wait for someone to respond helps
<
pie_[bnc]>
down side of getting paid per hour or per task is they pay in change eh? :P
<
Ericson2314>
Well I mean all the work being able to happen all at once is usually rather fictious
<
Ericson2314>
in highly collaborative things
