Hey, do we have any idea how much the Hydra's aarch64 binaries are used/useful (which branches, etc.)? Also any anticipated/possible/desired changes in the aarch64 HW available? (ATM we have one 96-core for Hydra and another one for community+Borg.)
<gchristensen>
hmm not sure, but do we need more capacity?
<gchristensen>
vcunat: what are you thinking about?
<vcunat>
It's probably the most limiting platform for larger rebuilds ATM, though it depends on the nature of changes.
<vcunat>
(some changes aren't mass rebuilds for darwin)
<vcunat>
Maybe a discourse thread would be more appropriate to gather feedback? Looking at history, this channel isn't getting much traffic, but perhaps aarch64 binary cache is the same :-)
<gchristensen>
sure
<sphalerite>
yes, probably
<gchristensen>
though it is worth noting we get more value out of supporting aarch64 than may be immediately evident
<vcunat>
Over longer term, looking at Hydra queue lengths, I believe it would be nice to strengthen Hydra's aarch64. The faster iteration rate can save human time.

<gchristensen>
ok
<gchristensen>
I talked to worksonarm people, they want us to try a new class of server which might be 2x faster
<sphalerite>
oooooooh

I'm about to get a RK3399 device, still torn between the acer chromebook tab 10 and the C101PA
<sphalerite>
what are the differences?
<samueldr>
one's a tablet, the other's a convertible laptop
<sphalerite>
I'm considering getting one again too, because apparently Alyssa Rosenzweig's C201 broke and she's now focussing on rk3399 for panfrost
<samueldr>
the tablet also has a digitizer+pen
<sphalerite>
digitizer?
<samueldr>
uh, the touchscreen has special supprot for the pen
<sphalerite>
I'll go for the c101pa if I do get an rk3399
<sphalerite>
because yay keyboard
<samueldr>
they're *probably* sharing most software bits, like the veyron-class hardware
<sphalerite>
and because I'm pretty happy with the c201!
<samueldr>
though, the c101pa only has 16GB storage, while the tablet has 32GB
<sphalerite>
SD cards to the rescue! :D
<samueldr>
16GB is small for the root (/) when including the store, and µSD are slow :/

<clever>
ive gotten nixos to "work" on a 4gig drive before, but it required very aggressive garbage collection

No love for the chrome book plus? Rk3399, keyboard and pen support.
<samueldr>
double the price :/
<samueldr>
(in $CAD)
<samueldr>
I could literally buy both the other RK3399 device instead
<thefloweringash[>
See if you can smash them together somehow :-)
<thefloweringash[>
My vote would be for the convertible laptop. I get by with f2fs on a microSD card, and leave ChromeOS alone for dual booting.
<thefloweringash[>
First I’ve heard of panfrost, but that’s a fairly exciting project.
<sphalerite>
thefloweringash[: indeed! There are frequent progress updates in #panfrost
<samueldr>
same
<sphalerite>
thefloweringash[: any nonfree drivers or firmware, besides graphics and wifi?
<sphalerite>
(for the chromebook plus)
<samueldr>
I'm curious for those RK3399 devices if they're mostly the same as the previous RK batch of chrome* devices
<samueldr>
the C101PA I have found a good deal of information online
<samueldr>
even the usb-c to serial for early boot messages
<samueldr>
(but missing a couple from the bootloader)
