The real issue with matrix for me was when I reached ~20 rooms, it started to go super slow (like ~30s just to load the app), so I came back to IRC

SO far I've always been able to reach almost everyone on IRC I needed for working on nixpkgs/nixos. I've seen plenty of new faces on matrix and not many of the old ones on Matrix.

immae: I haven't had such an experience. Initial sync is quite slow, but after that, it's snappy.

they implemented cross-signing which allows you to only verify the other person in a DM once, and key backup which allows you to backup your keys (encrypted) so you can restore them to other sessions
