<puffnfresh> gchristensen: hey!
<gchristensen> hey =)
<gchristensen> I have a linuxkit running under launchd succesfully
<puffnfresh> omg yayyyyyy
<puffnfresh> that is such good news
<gchristensen> :) working on a nicer installer to button it up
<gchristensen> I had to write a little Rust tool to make it work reliably
<LnL> planning to write a service module? :D
<gchristensen> I'd like to
<gchristensen> right now, though, I can't use nix-darwin for the first deployment, really
<puffnfresh> gchristensen: it's my innovation week at work this week, let me know if I can help
<gchristensen> another one? :o

<gchristensen> puffnfresh: I'm planning on a builder-configure command to setup the params (mem, disk, cpu) + setup /etc/nix/machines and then launchd starter/stopper
<gchristensen> sound right to you?
<gchristensen> back in 1hr
<puffnfresh> gchristensen: yes sounds great
<puffnfresh> I was heading in exactly that direction before I started trying to switch to the Nix plugin
<puffnfresh> do you think that since you have it running under launchd, that would solve the problems we were having with the plugin?
<puffnfresh> maybe I could make a plugin to just start/stop this separate service instead...

<gchristensen> puffnfresh: ah so questions about the plugin
<gchristensen> puffnfresh: when the plugin runs, what does nix do? will it make the connection and keep it open "forever"?
<gchristensen> I was too hazy on its behavior to feel good about using the plugin to start& stop it
<puffnfresh> gchristensen: nah it seems to close connections when the daemon's client disconnects
<puffnfresh> it also seems to kill everything spawned
<gchristensen> yeah that seems really annoying
<gchristensen> from the user's perspective --
<gchristensen> 10s+ to boot up
<puffnfresh> gchristensen: alright, I'm completely happy to go with whatever behaviour we get for now
<gchristensen> cool, ok
<gchristensen> what are you doing for innovation week, and how often do you have them?
<puffnfresh> I think auto starting the VM sounds like a good experience to me though
<puffnfresh> gchristensen: well I've been at LambdaJam this week so haven't worked on anything yet
<gchristensen> but then won't it shut down a lot?
<puffnfresh> we have them once a quarter
<puffnfresh> gchristensen: yeah, is that bad?
<gchristensen> just sounds slow I guess
<puffnfresh> I think we could make start up pretty quick
<puffnfresh> e.g. by hashing the Nix path registration thingo and only extracting once
<puffnfresh> I'll ignore the plugin for now anyway
<gchristensen> right
<gchristensen> wellllll it might be easier to do it via plugin :D

<alexteves> eacameron, elvishjerricco: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/40897
<elvishjerricco> alexteves: Incredible :)
<elvishjerricco> alexteves: What's the reason that we can't have Nix do the download again? Is it just legal stuff or is it a technical reason?
<LnL> legal, and I don't think it's accessible without an account
<alexteves> yeah you need an apple developer account or something
<alexteves> I think you can have wget ask for you password, but that might be overstepping the legal boundary
<alexteves> how does nix handle other passwords stuff? like private repos?
<LnL> then you need credentials at build time, and hydra would still not be allowed to build it since that's considered redistributing
<alexteves> oh I wasn't saying to have it cached or anything
<alexteves> just automate the individual downloads
<alexteves> from apple
<LnL> well it would still require configuration
<LnL> but fetchurl supports netrc and the new fetchGit will use your local ssh keys
